Lindsay's Story

ZunZun Sonrisa was created in tribute to the life and legacy of Lindsay Martin. A Phoenix native, Lindsay was a born helper; though she struggled at times to love herself, loving others came naturally. In 2008, Lindsay’s desire to be part of something bigger than herself came to fruition when she enlisted in the United States armed forces. Military service proved to be a tremendous outlet for Lindsay’s truest self to be expressed; she excelled as a leader and caregiver, drawing fellow recruits under her wing. Devastatingly, service also meant encountering both combat trauma in Iraq and sexual trauma within the very ranks of the institution where she had come to feel at home.

As a result, Lindsay’s ability to care for herself declined and she left military service with full medical benefits and a plan to enter rehab. Once again, Lindsay thrived in a supportive environment and worked hard to get clean and build a new life for herself. She began teaching, working hard to bring the best to her students, giving of herself as was her way.

Sadly, addiction caught Lindsay in its grasp again as the traumas from her time in the military wreaked havoc on her psyche. Alcohol wreaked havoc on her body and Lindsay died from kidney and liver failure at a tragically young age.

Lindsay’s story is, unfortunately, all too common. Women all over the globe struggle with addiction, often the result of trauma perpetuated by antiquated, misogynist systems and beliefs. Assigned the role of caregiver, too many women sacrifice their own health and well-being as they single-handedly support families and uplift communities.

Our mission at ZunZun Sonrisa is to empower women who have sought out treatment for their addiction and offer them a pathway to a more stable, healthy future. We seek to further Lindsay’s legacy of service by offering the kind of support she extended to those around her.
