ZunZun Sonrisa was founded in 2023 in honor of my sister, who passed away in 2021 after a long battle with alcoholism following significant trauma she experienced during her military service. She was an active-duty Army service member whose strength and resilience continue to inspire our mission every day.
The name ZunZun Sonrisa holds special meaning. During a trip to Cuba in 2017, locals noticed my hummingbird tattoo and called it a "zunzún," inspired by the Zunzuncito, the tiny hummingbird native to Cuba named for the humming sound it makes in flight. Sonrisa means "smile" in Spanish. Together, the name represents resilience, hope, and finding joy even in life's most difficult moments.
Today, we are a women-centered nonprofit dedicated to supporting women living with PTSD and those who care for and support them. Through compassion, connection, and community, we strive to honor my sister's legacy by helping others heal, grow, and smile again.
